CASE STUDY

Bay Tree Cottage is a perfect example of a chocolate box cottage.

With its traditional “Suffolk pink” walls and pretty thatched roof, it is now benefitting from new wooden windows and a hardwood door from Excell Timber Windows.

Grade II Listed means wooden windows are a must

Dating back to the 1580s, the Elizabethan property is Grade II listed and subject to strict planning rules.

The old 1970s windows were single glazed, poorly made and draughty and the owners wanted to replace them, ideally with double glazing. Unsure of whether this is possible, they were advised by Martin Serjeant from Excell Timber Windows that the narrow double glazing units used in the George Barnsdale Historic range have been approved in the past.

Reassured by this and Martin’s professionalism, Mr and Mrs Scotts decided Excell was the best company for their new wooden windows and entrance front door.

“We had spoken to a few companies but we were impressed with Martin’s knowledge of historic properties and the support he was able to offer with the planning process”

Mr Scotts, Homeowner

The stunning property now benefits from 8 wooden casement windows with a single glazing bar and slimline frames in keeping with the historic property.

Painted in a soft off-white shade they work well with the pink wash on the external walls.

Excell fitted monkeytail handles to complete the traditional aesthetic.

The benefit of double glazing in a historic property

The glazing is a narrow double glazed unit that is much more thermally efficient than the original single glazed windows. Since they are slimmer than normal double glazed units, they look like single glazing unless you look very closely. Having had their new windows installed last year, the couple found their home to be much warmer last winter.

“We are delighted with our new wooden windows. They look 100% better, are more efficient, they lock, unlike our old ones, and they open and close beautifully”

Mr Scotts

A front door that looks traditional but performs exceptionally

The couple also chose a beautiful stained wooden door which benefits from multi-point locking and is PAS-24 and Secured by Design. Complete with a small leaded window and traditional black hardware, the door is the perfect blend of historic design and 21st century performance.

The couple are so delighted with their new windows and door that they have recommended them to their neighbours who have also chosen to have windows from Excell Timber Windows.
