Combining traditional styling with modern performance standards our Historic range of windows has already been approved in several Listed Buildings & Conservation areas throughout the country.
Many heritage properties are either listed or in conservation areas. That means they’re often subject to rigorous restrictions relating to replacement of doors or windows. They must be sympathetic to the original character of the building and manufactured to an approved specification.
We supply an Historic range that has been specially created to provide products which conform to the design values of timber windows and doors commonly fitted to properties in previous centuries. Features include a wide selection of classic profiles, including slimline frame and sash options, putty glazing and window bars.
Glazing is a key issue in heritage windows and doors. The Historic window range features high-performance glazing systems supported by long-term guarantees. Traditional single glazing is not the only option. Our manufacturer, George Barnsdale’s research and development team has worked closely with planning authorities and conservation officers to design a range of approved double glazing options. There is also an option of having vacuum glass which performs exceptionally well but looks like single glazing.
While having an authentic heritage look and feel, our ‘Historic’ windows and doors retain most of the high-performance features of our main range, such as double draught seals for advanced weather proofing. The patented draught seal on our sliding sash windows ensures they perform as well as casement windows.
Holistic Solutions
Having worked with listed buildings for over ten years, our knowledge extends far beyond windows and doors and we have the right connections to ensure your home is restored in the right way. For example, if you have a lime render, it may need to be repaired when your new windows and doors are fitted. We use two excellent local companies for this: Mick Rickards Period Plastering & Richard Hoy Red Fox Plastering.
We have also worked with timber frame experts William Clement-Smith and Rick Lewis learning the craft of oak framing.
It’s no surprise that learning how to take apart someone’s home whilst it is balanced on a row of Acros teaches you a lot about how timber buildings are made and how to restore them. Understanding the bones of a building helps us specify the right solutions whilst respecting the integrity of the structure.

Navigating the planning system for listed buildings isn’t easy but we can help. We have been assisting our clients with their applications for listed planning consent for new windows and doors for many years. This also means we specify the right products from the beginning so you shouldn’t have to go back and forth negotiating with the Conservation Officer.
